In December 1944, the serene stillness of the Ardennes Forest was forever shattered by the heavy clank of churning treads, the low growling of diesel engines and the labored breathing of determined soldiers. A mounumental struggle was developing in this pristine wilderness, one that could affect the course of the war. The German army had launched a surprise winter offensive upon the Allied forces, known as the Battle of the Bulge.
